How to Sign into MFA with a New Device

Last modified 4/15/2024

If you are unable to login to your MFA Authenticator Application after getting a new device, and no longer have access to the old device where the application was installed you may be unable to login to your Microsoft 365 and VPN. If you try to login or install the application on your new device, you could also appear to be stuck in an authentication loop.

In this event please contact the Technology Support Center at 309-438-4357 or submit a help ticket at Help.IllinoisState.edu/Get-IT-Help.

The Technology Support Center will be able to 'reset' your authentication methods after a verification process. This will allow you to go through the process of setting up your MFA on your new device. We will also recommend that you set up multiple methods of verification.

Multiple MFA verification methods recommended

It is recommended that you set up more than one verification method for Multi-Factor Authentication. If you are able to do this before you get a new device, you should be able to authenticate using one of the other methods that you had set up. That way you are able to set up your new device on your own. You can find out more about setting up multiple methods by reading: Adding Additional Verification Methods for Multi-Factor Authentication. To change your default MFA method, see Change the Default Method for Authenticating with MFA.
