Microsoft Project is a project management software product, developed and sold by Microsoft. It is designed to assist a project manager in developing a schedule, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing the budget, and analyzing workloads. It is a desktop application that must be licensed (at an extra cost) either perpetually or through a subscription license. Combined with another system, called Project Online, it can be used for project timesheets fed from multiple projects against an Enterprise Resource Pool. 
 
The 365 app called "Project" (previously "Project for the Web") is being renamed to "Planner with premium capabilities". This 365 app also comes at an extra cost. Before requesting "Planner with premium capabilities" (sku project plan 3), you should first try "Planner" and see if it meets your needs. Read more here: Microsoft Planner.
