Recommended Fax Machine Settings
Last modified 9/20/2023
Fax machines on campus should be set up as described in this article to improve fax quality and speed and to reduce the chance of communication failures.
Before You Begin
The information below describes recommended settings for fax machines on campus. Setting up your fax machine with the recommended settings can help you improve quality and reduce the chance of communication failures.
Recommended Fax Settings
We recommend you set up your fax machine using the following settings:
- Set fax speed to 9600bps
- Turn on V.17
- Turn off ECM (Error Correction Mode)
- Turn off TAD (Telephone Answering Device)
Additional Suggestions
- Some fax machines will allow you to set V.17. Most of these fax machines will automatically bump down to the speed that will be successful.
- Some fax machines will not specify the bit rate in the configuration menu, but have a “BASIC” speed that you will need to set.
- On some fax machines, turning on Overseas Mode is the same as turning off ECM.
